High Priestess by KatWylder High Priestess by KatWylder
Prints of this painting are now available! See my journal for more info.

Edit: Reworked some details and changed the background to better fit the portrait style.

This is a woman* of the Syšloš species, named Eyloeiwa. She is the Supreme Priestess of her peoples' dominant religion. She is shown here wearing a ceremonial headdress.

*Yes, she is lacking breasts; no, she doesn't need any. The Syšloš don't nurse their young.

Looks a bit like Crescens from Gold Digger. Great job...your art is just exquisite.

It's a compliment. I don't have a link to a picture for you, but she was a tragic badass in Gold Digger, my favorite comic/manga.

As far as the background is concerned, I didn't pay it much attention until you mentioned something in the note about the other critique that you got. It would certainly be more striking if there was more contrast, however too much and it'll completely change the feel of what you created. I understand that the setting is an important aspect to the character but seeing as though you don't get to see much, it seems inconsequential in the long run. There's nothing I can personally attach myself to in the background to give me some sort of impression or indication, leading into a further insight into this character. So like you had stated, perhaps changing the background may benefit you. I don't know if I would do abstract entirely though, because it may seem kind of lazy. Soft focus perhaps, with some sort of relevant background. I would stay away from overly saturated colors though. Something colorful but subdued may serve you well.

I was thinking about doing a space scene in the background--nebula, stars, etc--in somewhat muted colors, but trying to make it appear as a decorative element.

Kind of like it's not just "Space!" but that it's a painting or something she's in front of.

You know, I was thinking something along those lines, especially since you have such an affinity and ability with painting said subject matter ^_^

Interesting design. Does this mean she doesn't need eyes too? Or is just for the ceremony? If she doesn't need eyes, then how does she move around?

Glad you like the design!

The headdress is made of a material that doesn't hinder her perception.

I just noticed, are those stray hairs coming up behind the plate and head dress? If so, I guess Supreme Priestess' can have a hard time getting their hair just right. :P It looks great, and your attention to detail is always amazing.

Yeah, those are stray hairs. This species has very coarse hair. So, even when they've styled it, it tends not to look "perfect."

Thanks, love!
