Just a portrait I've been working on for practice the past couple days. I wanted to paint someone a little older, so I picked Helina. I think I need to do a bit more tweaking, because the lines at the corners of her mouth and eyes aren't very visible at this resolution. But, the bulk of the work is done, so I'm pretty happy with it, right now. The ice wolf, (her personal insignia), was a lot of fun to do. I may add full color, as well, later.
In any case, I think it's a big improvement over the portrait I did of Akela last year. (Practice really does pay off!)
Good work on the portrait, though her face seems a bit flat. I would mumble something about shading but I wouldn't really know what I'm talking about :/
I didn't spend an extremely great deal of time on this, so I suppose the shading isn't quite as smooth as it could be. I may go back when I have time and fix that. Thanks!

Bah, always Kerenskys... who's the great IlKhan who saved the Inner Sphere from the Crusaders, Ulric Kerensky! Who's the best warrior of the Dragoons and has the body of a 20-year old into her 70s, Natasha Kerensky! Who took over the Steel Wolves from Kal Radick, a Wolf with a real plan for power in the Republic, Anastasia Kerensky! What bloodhouse for the Wolves do writers and RPers choose because it's the coolest, Kerensky! Gimme a Nostra or Drummond any day.
Really nice drawing, I like the colors used. I can't remember from when I read your Battletech stories last, but was this one of the characters in them?
Ah, Helina and her "nephew" Akela are Kerenskys for a specific plot reason. I don't go around just slapping the "coolest" bloodname on a character. For example, Randi from "Black Wolf" is a Sender.
Anyway, I'm glad you like the pic. And to answer your question, yes, Helina has appeared in a number of stories as a minor character, actually.

Looks great, as usual. She looks rather sad around the eyes--I don't know if that was intentional. She certainly has the build of a Clan MechWarrior, though I hate that short hairstyle! I know it makes sense--you probably don't want long hair in a hot 'Mech cockpit--but it does have a tendency to make Helina look mannish. (Incidentally, this is more how I pictured Ranna Kerensky than the godawful picture in More Tales of the Black Widow.)
If I have any critique, it's the colors. A full color or lighter shading (like that which you used with Akela) would make the pic less harsh. To me, it's too much like a photo negative.
The hair probably won't change much, but maybe it'll look a bit more feminine or whatnot once this is colored. I essentially used just one brush through this whole thing, and I think it's given the hair a more stiff texture than it should have. I'll make sure to pay attention to that aspect.
Also, the more I look at this, the more I think, "Yeah, I should do full-color." So, consider the monochrome an under-painting.
Thanks.

As for the hair, no worries. Like I said, I imagine most female MechWarriors would wear their hair short--easier to maintain, not as much to wash or get bugs in while in the field, and the absolute last thing you want is to get hair in your eyes when you're trying to shoot at something (Morgan Kell, I'm looking at *you*) or get hair hung up in the ejection seat when it's time to hit the loud handle and step out. I just draw my MechJockettes with long hair because I like long hair personally, not because it makes any sense "realistically."

Very nice, although I still like Akela better.
